Salaries in Hong Kong - how much do people earn in the most expensive city in the world?

27 September 2022

Hong Kong is the largest economic center, a powerful Asian tiger with a decent standard of living, its own currency (Hong Kong dollar) and high wages, which are at the level of prosperous Western countries. All these factors annually attract businessmen and promising highly qualified specialists from all over the world to Hong Kong.

However, Hong Kong is also one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Over 7.3 million people live on its small territory. Needless to say, the issue of employment here is extremely acute? - Finding a job by posting your resume on a job search site or by mailing to companies is unrealistic. Most companies do not even advertise vacancies, but prefer to recruit employees based on personal recommendations.

In Hong Kong, to this day, there is a huge gap between the poor and the rich. A wealthy person here earns 20-30, or even 50 times more than a simple worker.

By law, the minimum wage per hour is 37.5 HKD (about 285 rubles). Cleaners work at this rate. If we assume that a person works 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, then for a month he will receive 9,750 HKD (74,000 rubles). It will be difficult to live on such a salary in Hong Kong.

As for the average income per month, then, according to August 2022, in the region it is 16465 HKD (approximately 124.930 rubles).

If we consider the average earnings by the size of the enterprise in which a person works, then the picture will be as follows:
  • In micro-enterprises (with up to 15 employees) - the average salary is 9,879 HKD (74,960 rubles);
  • In small businesses (up to 100 people) - 14,819 HKD (112,440 rubles);
  • In medium-sized companies (from 100 to 250 people) - 18,111 HKD (137,420 rubles);
  • In large enterprises in Hong Kong (from 250 people) - 23,051 HKD (174,900 rubles);
  • In the public sector in Hong Kong, the average salary is 13,172 HKD (99,940 rubles).
Over the past year, the increase in wages in Hong Kong was 3%. Below is a comparative table of salaries for 2021-2022.
